ในปัจจุบันทรัพยากรทางทะเลระดับลึก ที่หลายประเทศสนใจมีลักษณะการเกิดแบ่งเป็น 3 แบบ ซึ่งเกิดในทะเลลึกได้แก่
- ก้อนเฟอร์โรแมงกานีส (Ferromanganese nodules)
- เหล็กและแมงกานีสในชั้นเปลือกเลือกบริเวณแนวภูเขาใต้ทะเล (ferromanganese crusts หรือ cobalt-rich crusts)
- แหล่งแร่ซัลไฟล์บริเวณปล่องแร่น้ำร้อนตามแนวสันเขากลางสมุทร (Seafloor massive sulfides)
